There was some legislation passed in the 2002 Farm Bill, but it’s not been implemented, as it was found that mandatory food labels are unlikely to increase food demand and likely will generate more costs than benefits, according to research at the USDA Economic Research Service.

Now, Agriculture Secretary, Tom Vilsack, has made this mandatory on some foods, including meat products that have been processed, such as cooked meats.

Some products are still exempt, such as food produced in a restaurant, and TV dinners for example. Still if you’re worried about the contents of your restaurant meal you can always ask them about it, and if they can’t or won’t supply product details, you can always vote with your feet.

As for TV dinners, you don’t eat those do you?
