Dump HFCS, and other Sugar from your Diet

The Corn Refiners Association (CRA) seemingly takes exception to any suggestion that High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS) is in any way to blame for the increase in Child diabetes in the United States.

The CRA loves to quote the American Medical Association (AMA) as saying that HFCS doesn’t appear to contribute more to obesity to other caloric sweeteners (such as regular sugar, for example).


However, The AMA also recommends a daily limit of 32 grams of such sweeteners. The average can of soda contains 40 grams of HFCS.

So even if HFCS in itself does no more harm than other sweeteners, we can’t get away from the fact that the average American consumes far more sweeteners of all kinds than is recommended by the AMA – over 500% more. As practically all processed food products contain HFCS, it is a major contributor to obesity, and diabetes in the USA.

The best way forward is to cut out processed foods altogether. Eat fresh fruit, vegetables, meat, pasta, diary, beans and whole grains. Check anything in a carton, box, or packet though to be sure of what you are actually eating.

Cutting out processed foods, and sweeteners, including HFCS, cannot do any harm.

Processed Food Carries Higher Cancer Risks

The World Cancer Research Fund and the American Institute for Cancer Research recently looked at how food affects cancer rates. The study showed that added salt and chemical preservatives and colors increased cancer risks.

Many processed foods can be directly linked to an increased risk of stomach cancer, and too much salt, leads to other complications such as hypertension. Processed foods can often lead to obesity too, which can increase the risk of some cancers.

Other research has shown that about 30% of all cancer deaths can be attributed to poor diet and exercise routines.

Eating as much fresh fruit, vegetables and lean white meat and wild fish can help in reducing these risks.

The skin is hyper-pigmented, in a smooth, yet irregular, shape. It can be found in the “folds” of the skin.. at the neck, axila, navel, knees, elbows, ankles, and groin.

It is called Acanthosis Nigricans, and the main cause is Insulin Resistance.

Insulin Resistance is a pre-cursor to diabetes (pre-diabetes) and the main symptom of Poly-cystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS.)

But, many children are now being diagnosed with diabetes.

Insulin is a regulatory hormone, in the body.  It works with Glucagon, to tell the body when to store and not store the fat that we consume, in our diets.  It is triggered by carbohydrates or “sugars.”

When insulin levels are high, the body stores fat (converted “sugars”,) to use, later, for energy.

Glucagon is a regulatory hormone that pulls “fuel” from the body..  It is a reaction hormone and dependent on  insulin levels lowering, to react, to burn stored energy.

When we constantly consume “sugars” and junk food, we over stimulate our insulin production.  We burn out this imaginary switch, that tells the body to start producing Glucagon.

It doesn’t matter, to the body’s functioning whether we are not producing any insulin (Type I Diabetes) or if we have a constant supply of high levels of Insulin (Type II Diabetes.)  All that matters, is that Glucagon is not being triggered..

The body is constantly storing fat.  The “sugars,” being consumed, are being converted to fat, and also being stored.

Insulin Resistance is the main cause of obesity.

High Fructose Corn Syrup

High fructose corn syrup, sugar and several fruit juices are all nutritionally the same, according to Audrae Erickson, President, Corn Refiners Association. She says that High fructose corn syrup has the same number of calories as sugar and is handled similarly by the body.

The American Medical Association in June 2008 helped put to rest misunderstandings about this sweetener and obesity, stating that “high fructose syrup does not appear to contribute to obesity more than other caloric sweeteners.”

That last statement though, is the rub. If you really want to eat food with less calories, and better nutritional values, then it’s recommended to cut out the empty calories that come with ALL calorific sweeteners, including both regular sugar, and HFCS.

So TGFC still thinks it’s a good idea to avoid HFCS as part of a sensible diet regimen.

It’s not just US

The United States has long had a reputation for being a nation full of overweight junk food eaters. Of course, that’s not true, and the US isn’t really far ahead (if at all) of nations like the UK, in the amount of take-out junk food they consume, and the amount of processed food that they buy.

However, what might surprise some are the concerns being raised in countries like India. As the average consumer in India gets more disposable income they too, are turning more and more to Western style junk.

In Madurai, in southern India yesterday, the Health Minister, Dr Anbumani Ramadoss said, “The union health and family welfare ministry would continue its war against junk food, alcohol, tobacco and drugs as they are mainly responsible for making India “the capital of diabetes, heart ailments and obesity”.

Fat Kids

A recently released study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention showed that about 32 percent of children were overweight, 16 percent were obese, and 11 percent were extremely obese.

Meanwhile junk food companies continue to promote so-called healthy choices, such as diet sodas, and low-fat chips. Many cereal products are way less than healthy too, containing large amounts of sugar or the ubiquitous High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS).

Whatever the recent commercials from the corn industry might say about HFCS, the bottom line is that it’s still empty calories, and eating less calories is one way to lose weight. Quite simply, if you burn more calories than you take in, you’ll eventually lose some pounds.

Junk Food for Kids

A study from the U.S Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that was released in 2008 showed that around a third of children were overweight, about a sixth were obese, and just over ten percent were extremely obese.

Meanwhile, the junk food companies have taken to pretending to claim they want children to make healthier food choices (as long as it’s one of their ‘healthier’ products of course).

Examples of such ‘healthy’ choices include diet soda, and packets of reduced fat chips!

The junk food manufacturers spend as much as ten billion dollars annually to get kids to eat junk food, meanwhile either promoting it as healthier choices, or minimizing the effects its consumption might have.

The purpose of all this advertising, is of course, to persuade kids they’d love to eat this stuff, which often isn’t hard to do, and also persuade parents that the ‘reduced fat’ version is somehow actually healthy for junior.  The best thing many parents can do is to re-educate themselves on what foods are truly beneficial to their children, and then educate their children about this. It can truly be an uphill battle, when the junk food manufacturers, for all their clever words, really only have their bottom line as their concern, not kids health.
